How you say it counts!
In a WordPress posting explain the results you got. How could you improve your previous post? Do you agree with the concept embodied in the Fog Index?
Before submitting a previous writing into the online Gunning Fog Index, I expected the score to be low. My vocabulary is limited and the words I use are simple, so I thought it would be an easy reading for anyone. Then I thought about my long sentences, grammar, punctuation, and that maybe my writing is not so easy to read. I do know my writing needs improvement. That there are so many grammar rules I need to memorize and practice, but to get a score of 11 was shocking. Reading a little more about Gunning Fog Index and how the score result is to tell which grade level can read it, made me confused.
I am on the fence about this formula. First, the formula looked complicated and not something I would want to use often. Second, it may guide some writes who are trying to make the reading easy for most people, but I am not really sure that we need it. As long as proper English grammar rules are used, then I believe that is all we need. Maybe it is just me but the score result is supposed to tell which school level can read it. Everyone is different and have different reading levels even if they are in the same grade.
If a writing is done following the English grammar properly but the writer uses long words, long sentences, the score will be high. If a writes uses shorter words, shorter sentences, the score will be low. Not all long words are complicated or hard to understand some are very common and used daily by most Americans. Sometimes a long sentence is needed and it makes sense.
My average number of words per sentence result was19 in this assignment. In the future, I will try to write shorter sentences, use plain English, so my writing is clear and simple. I will also try to double check the grammar and punctuation before submitting the assignment. This writing has a score of 8.6 according to the online Gunning Fog Index.
